-Robert also recognized Rotarians at the Chamber lunch, and asked how many had Rotary pins on?
-Wes put in $5 “in terms of Robert and his Cubs”.
-Fred is happy to be back. He has a surrogate granddaughter who is a champion golfer – also 13 years old – her name is Alana Kutt.
Laura shared a Dig N Grin chuckle about aging neighbors.
Speaker: Our speaker was Ravi Rade, who came to Chicago to attend U of C Booth School. After working as a trader for years, he trained in a Mindfulness program and now provides this training to groups.
Mindfulness will reduce stress and increase productivity. Engaging in mindfulness exercises regularly is important – practicing regularly increases the effects.
Statistics show the following about people in the work force:
47% report that their mind is wandering while working
70% report that they are inattentive in meetings
2% have a commitment to personal productivity

We engaged in a three-minute exercise designed to show us how to be mindful – to follow our breath and re-engage when we realize that we are distracted.
This three minute exercise can be done anytime during the day. You can also engage in a “micropractice” by taking three breaths in 15 seconds and relaxing your body to reduce stress.
Handout attached to this summary.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:30, reciting the Four Way Test as we do each week.

Every Rotarian Every Year- Support The Rotary Foundation- Club Update

As the 2018-19 Rotary Year nears its conclusion, please join the millions of beneficiaries of projects funded by The Rotary Foundation in thanking our members who have honored their commitment of Every Rotarian, Every Year, contribute to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Programs Fund.

With a bit over two months to go, our club members have donated a total of $3,382 in the 2018-19 Rotary Year, one third of our goal this year of $10,000.

Please thank these 7 Rotarians for already making their annual contribution, especially those in bold who are Paul Harris Fellows:

Wes Baumann, David Birkenstein*+, David Grant*, Heather Higgins, Rich Lalley+, Lee Padgitt, Fred Schwimmer+
* signifies a Major Donor signifies Paul Harris Society ($1,000 per year)

There are many reasons to give to the The Rotary Foundation:

  • Contributions support humanitarian and educational projects initiated and run by Rotary Clubs and Districts in six areas of focus- Disease prevention and treatment, maternal & child health, education & literacy, water and sanitation, economic & community development and peace & conflict resolution.  Learn more by reviewing the Foundation’s annual report.
  • Contributions come back to support projects of our club's projects, like our coats for kids, Kids Against Hunger and International grants projects like our Farm to Table eco-agribusiness project in Ecuador, the water and sanitation projects we helped fund for schools in Guatemala and Kenya, and the digital x-ray/community health clinic project organized by District 6440. This year, we received over $3,500 for our Kids Against Hunger project! But we must give to receive.
  • Charity Navigator gives The Rotary Foundation its highest “Four Star” rating, giving it a score 100 out of 100.
  • The Association of Fundraising Professionals named The Rotary Foundation the World's Outstanding Foundation of 2016!
  • Giving to The Rotary Foundation is an easy way for you to participate in Rotary’s service work beyond our club, providing you a personal connection to this great organization and the good it does throughout the world.
It’s easy to give.  You can donate with a check or credit card at lunch; you can send a check to “WNRCF” (mark TRF in the memo line) to our club at 620 Lincoln Ave, Winnetka; you can donate via PayPal by clicking here, or you can donate directly to The Rotary Foundation at www.rotary.org or by calling 866-976-8279. One very convenient way to give is by making a recurring monthly gift on your credit card or from your checking account, which you can set up on Rotary’s website.

If you have not already supported The Rotary Foundation this year, please do so now.

If you have any questions about The Rotary Foundation or how to give, contact Rich Lalley.

Speaker on 4/11: Ravi Rade

Mindfulness for Career Success

Ravi Rade, an executive leadership coach and mindfulness teacher will speak to us about how mindfulness can help us to reduce stress from our busy, demanding life and how to achieve a focused concentration that leads to greater performance and success. In the corporate world,  from the last 10 years, mindfulness is becoming a more and more sought after technique for outstanding leadership, stellar performance, and well-being of employees. Ravi will be introducing mindfulness. You will also get an experience of how just a few minutes of mindfulness meditation can make our mind calm, reduce stress and build focus.

An MBA from Booth school, Ravi has 25 years of corporate experience. Latest was as director of trading systems performance at Chicago Board Options Exchange. There he led a team of highly specialized engineers and managers. Trading systems are extremely demanding, a couple of seconds glitch causes government investigation and more than 12 milliseconds of response brings a flood of client complaints. To deal with such a stressful environment Ravi found mindfulness as an effective technique. And when he came across Search Inside Yourself, (a Google-developed mindfulness-based emotional intelligence program), he found a science-based, practical and results-producing way to incorporate mindfulness into work and personal life. He helped his team at CBOE to do the same. The results motivated him to start his year-long journey to become Search Inside Yourself Teacher and now he conducts this 2-Day experiential course at various corporate offices.

Last year, Ravi hired a Co-Active coach who helped him to find the path ahead in his life. Because of that coaching, Ravi could transform his career from computer performance to people performance. He realized the tremendous power of self-exploration that Co-Active coaching brings out. So, he also did another journey of becoming Co-Active (executive leadership) coach. And now he works with growth-hungry professionals to maximize their success and reduce stress from their life. He conducts one on one coaching sessions with directors, managers from global corporations all over the world. His clients explore their inner strengths and magnify them. During coaching sessions, clients do deep thinking about what’s important for them. As a result, they start taking actions which they had been postponing for a long time, with a strong commitment to follow-through.

Meeting Recap April 4
The meeting in the Winnetka Community House was opened at 12:15 by President Bill Leske.  The pledge of allegiance was led David Birkenstein. Rick Boerjesson gave an interesting Thought for the Day. Lunch was then served at 12:20.

The meeting resumed at 12:32 and 26 members were present. Our only (sort of) visitor was Mark Kotz who also got a nice round of warm applause.

Birthdays noted were Ned Meisner and Tom & Joe Nash. These were celebrated with a questionable vocal rendition of Happy Birthday. Anniversaries recognized were Denny Lauer (44 years), Heather Higgins (24 years) and Terry Dason (3 years).

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Announcements started with Marie Kuipers update of the June 1 benefit. She said auction items were much needed and an early commitment to attend was needed as she had to commit early for food with the caterer.

Rich Lalley said another $200 was needed to sponsor the Shelter Box project initiated the week before. He then noted the outstanding money raiser done by Joe Nash in support of Operation Warm. For that he presented Joe a special “Gratitude Book”.

John Thomas reminded us the 50th Anniversary of the WYO will be celebrated with a dinner/dance benefit on April 13 at the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club

HAPPY BUCKS: Heidi Sibert announced her company, James Martin & Associates was donating $200 each to Operation Warm and to Kids Against Hunger.

DIG & GRIN : Bob Baker spun out a series of anecdotes received with warm applause.

SPEAKER- Our speaker, Tish Rudnicki, has dedicated her professional life to helping seniors throughout Chicagoland live healthy and fulfilling lives. She joined North Shore Senior Center as Executive Director in mid-January of this year.

Prior to joining the North Shore Senior Center, Tish was at the Kenneth Young Center for 29 years and completed her tenure there as the Chief Program Officer overseeing all of their behavioral health, medical and older adult programming.

In her three short months as Executive Director of NSSC, Tish has been learning the  North Shore Senior Center’s vast scope of programs and services—from its classes and clubs, to the work its social workers do with struggling seniors and people living with memory loss.

She noted the NSSC was at the Winnetka Community House for its first 35 years. It currently has two buildings in east Northfield. One houses the offices, eating area, auditorium and Fitness center. The other has the House of Welcome with memory loss programs.

She described the great range of activities within its current $8MM budget. The staff numbers about 130 with an additional 300 volunteers. Only 20 of that staff are administrative and the remainder are mostly social workers. She spoke for about 20 minutes and devoted the next 35 minutes to answering questions from the audience.

The meeting closed at 1:30 after the usual lottery drawing and a recitation of the 4-Way pledge.
