The meeting in the Winnetka Community House was opened at 12:16 by President Tom Nash. A brief “Thought for the Day” came from Rich Lalley filling in for Laura Cunningham. It was followed by the pledge of allegiance led by John Stone.
Lunch was served at 12:24 and the meeting then started at 12:36. 26 of our 51 members were in attendance. Three guests were introduced. First was the new Marketing Manager of the WCH and a candidate for membership. Second and third were Eric Birkenstein’s two children. A semi-tuneful Happy Birthday was then harmonized for both Barb Tubekis and Mary Komolfske.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: President Nash reminded us that the Winnetka Music Festival will be here this weekend -- June 15-16. Volunteers are still needed. Please see Patti Van Cleave if interested and/or available.
Rich Lalley again noted the end of May is the end of the Rotary year. He urged members to send modest contributions to the RI Foundation so we have a 100% participation as has been the case for some years now.
SPEAKER : Co-speakers were David Shoon , the Director of Community Development for the Village of Winnetka. He was joined by Judy Mariano, Planner for Teska Associates, the firm advising the Village on both Streetscape and the new Master Plan.
Mr. Shoon made brief opening remarks and noted both the Streetscape and Master Plan had been under development for several years. He said the Village Council had just adopted the new Streetscape and a conceptual Master Plan on June 18. He then turned the presentation over to Ms. Mariano. With extensive slide s, she showed us what will be involved in new lighting, signage and street configuration. She hastened to explain all was to be started in the Elm Street in the near future.
A lively Q&A session followed her presentation. John Stone led it off by explaining and complaining that no mention was made of attacking the parking challenges. He has seen a variety of solutions proposed. But in over 40 years of working on Lincoln in the middle of the affected area, he has seen no action. John Thomas added a ditto to Dr. Stones’ comments as did Fred Schwimmer.
The meeting closed at 1:26 p.m. with a recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Pledge.
