Meeting Notes April 7
Discussion:  President Greg led the meeting.

Thought:  Julie Tye could not join us today, so she arranged for Barb Tubekis to read the Outword Bound motto, which is an excerpt from Ulysses, by Tennyson:

Come, my friends,
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Announcements:
  • Rich updated us on Ukraine fundraising. The Northbrook Club is organizing a food-packing event scheduled for Saturday, 4/30.
  • Moha advised us not to miss next week’s meeting – he has arranged a fabulous speaker from Northwestern U.

Happy Bucks:
  • Robert donated because he is on the way to the Cubs opener.
  • Bob donated because he is not on his way to the Cubs opener (raining and 30 degrees).
  • Tony wants us to pray for peace in the world.
  • Rich is happy that next week Moha will run the IT at the meeting in his absence.

Speaker:  In honor of International Women’s Day, Barb Tubekis shared a video celebration of how Rotary is working towards a vision of gender equality.  Rotary is in a unique place to make a difference as women confront barriers in education, marriage, etc. around the world and particularly in third world countries.  Covid has been particularly difficult for many young girls.

Ukraine Relief Update
Our club has contributed to several significant Ukrainian relief efforts:
  • We have provide nearly one quarter of the $40,000 sent to the Rotary Club of Kyiv International to support their extensive relief activity. The Rotary Club of River Cities has a sister club relationship with Kyiv International, and has been raising funds and transferring them to Ukraine. This support has allowed for the purchasing and distribution of tons of food, medicines and medical supplies and setting up of temporary refugee shelters. Here's a 45 minute video update from Ukraine of their remarkable efforts.

  • We have contributed $3,000 and our Rotary Foundation District Designated Funds of over $2,200 to a Global Grant project in Lithuania that will provide mental health training to teachers and school psychologists in Lithuania to improve the ability to work with Ukrainian refugee children. We will have a detailed update on this project at our May 5 meeting.

  •  The Rotary Foundation Disaster Relief Fund is providing grants to clubs and districts that are deploying humanitarian relief in and around Ukraine, and some of our members have contributed to that fund as well.

  • We have an opportunity on Saturday April 30 to participate in a 50,000 meal food packing with Outreach Feed6 in Rolling Meadows. We need to deliver 9 - 12 volunteers and $1,000. All meals are being shipped to Ukraine by a local business. Let Rich know if you would like to participate or contribute.
