Meeting Notes April 22
President Chuck called the meeting to order at 12:15.
Bob Baker shared a Thought from the Jewish Prayer Book Gates of Remembrance that spoke to the evolution of our lives.
President Chuck welcomed guest Kevin Stevens, from the North Chicago club, who is District-Governor-Elect.
Birthdays: Mike Wurzberg. Rich reminded all that Paul Harris’s birthday was earlier this week.
Announcements:
Barb reminded us that Earth Day is today, and in honor of Earth Day there is an event in Evanston working outdoors on Saturday at 9:30.
John asked anyone who has an idea for a speaker for May 6 to let him know.
Kevin announced that the District Installation Event is likely to be outdoors, the last weekend in June.
Rich appealed to the club again to support The Rotary Foundation before the end of the fiscal year which is June 30.
Happy Bucks:
Barb is happy that it’s sunny out, happy about the great news this week related to civil liberties and that Liz’s bank helped her SO MUCH with the PPP loan!
Dig&Grin: Transcribed here because Wes was hysterically funny!
"Leave it to a woman:"The CIA had an opening for an assassin.  After all the background checks, interviews and testing were done, there were three finalists: two men and a woman.
For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow your instructions no matter what the circumstances.  Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in a chair. Kill her."
The man said "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife".
The agent said, "Then you are not the right man for this job. Take your wife and go home".
The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about five minutes.
The man came out with tears in his eyes, "I tried, but I can't kill my wife."
The agent said, "You don't have what it takes, so take your wife and go home."
Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same instructions to kill her husband.   She took the gun and went into the room.   Shots were heard one after another.   They heard screaming, crashing, and banging on the walls.   After a few minutes, all was quiet.   The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping sweat from her brow.
"The gun was loaded with blanks" she said.  "I had to kill him with the chair."

Getting Older:
Last year, I joined a support group for procrastinators.  We haven't met yet !

I don't need anger management.  I need people to stop pissing me off!

Old age is coming at a really bad time!

When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment ... now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation!

The biggest lie I tell myself is ... "I don't need to write that down, I’ll remember it."

My people skills are just fine.  It's my tolerance for idiots that needs work.

If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would've put them on my knees.

I'm going to retire and live off of my savings.  Not sure what I'll do that second week.

I like my middle finger best because it always sticks up for me!

Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.

When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

Even duct tape can't fix stupid ... but it can muffle the sound!

Lord, Give me patience and give it to me NOW!

At my age "Getting lucky" means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for.

Program:
John Thomas introduced Dr. Scott Mitchell of SamaraCare Counseling. Dr. Mitchell is a Rotarian in the Naperville club. He described the programs of SamaraCare, which has an office in Winnetka on Oak St. and is supported by our Community Grants program.  His very informative presentation covered the services provided and detailed the needs of people who approach SamaraCare for services. A declining availability of Social Workers and Mental Health professionals and a dramatic increase in the public’s need for mental health services, especially in the past year, has greatly increased the need for services. A robust Q&A session followed the presentation, with significant networking involved. Good work, Rotarians!

President Chuck adjourned the meeting at 1:17PM.

Meeting Recordings
One of the nice features of meeting virtually is that our meetings can be recorded. This of course depends on your meeting host (me) remembering to start the recording (sometimes I'm a bit late in starting it).

Warm Soles- New Shoes for Kids Living in Need

Our club will be providing brand new shoes to children living in need as part of the Rotary District 6440 Warm Soles project. Each pair of shoes requires $6.50 when match by a Rotary District Grant.  Our goal is to raise $1,000 to provide new shoes to 150 children. Shoes will go to NICASA North Chicago, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and Cool Learning Experience in Waukegan.

Nearly one in five children live in need. For their families, paying for food, housing, heat and healthcare takes priority. Many children may have to go without the cold weather essentials they need to stay healthy and active. Replacing quickly out-grown shoes can be extremely difficult for low-income and below poverty families.
